Sailing with Teens: How to Choose the Right Cruise for an Amazing Vacation

Teens are notoriously one of the hardest demographics to please, so understanding what type of cruise line, itinerary, and onboard experience you’re signing up for is essential. Itinerary vs. Onboard Experience: The First Big Decision
Before you choose a cruise line, decide whether your priority is exploring new destinations or enjoying the onboard amenities.
Some ships are built for adventure in port, while others focus on onboard entertainment designed for nonstop fun. Knowing which type of vacation you want to enjoy will help set you up for success.
Cruises Built Around the Itinerary
If your goal is to explore, learn, and see several different destinations in one trip, choose a
cruise with exciting ports of call—especially ones your teens haven’t visited before. Teens love new experiences, great photo ops, and destinations that feel different from everyday life.
Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and even some Princess Cruise Line sailings offer fantastic options for this style of travel. The smaller ships can access ports that larger vessels can’t, and their pricing is reasonable, especially on Celebrity. In 2025, we sailed the Celebrity Infinity through the Greek Islands, visiting five different ports in seven days. We chose this sailing because it offered a rich itinerary and still provided enough onboard amenities to keep everyone comfortable. Smaller ships may not have the amenities teens find on “kid friendly” lines, but they make up for it with access to incredible destinations. We made our own fun—pool time, card games from home, and plenty of relaxation after long excursion days. Plus, we booked two separate cabins, which gave all four of us space to unwind without being crammed into one cabin.
Cruises Built Around Onboard Amenities
This year, we flipped the script and sailed Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas specifically for the onboard experience. In my opinion, Royal Caribbean is the best cruise line for teens. Their ships offer the most activities, incredible variety, and ample opportunity for independence. Most of the onboard amenities, with the exception of a few, are included with the cost of the sailing.
Icon of the Seas is the largest class of ship at sea, so it only visits larger ports, but that was
perfect for us. With just three ports on a seven-day sailing, we had plenty of time to explore
everything onboard: a full water park, rock climbing wall, mini golf, ice skating rink, Playmakers with pool and foosball tables, Crown’s Edge (added fee), and even an escape room (also a fee). We knew this cruise was about the ship, not the ports, and it delivered exactly what we hoped for.
Why Royal Caribbean Is My Top Pick for Teens
Even beyond Icon, Royal Caribbean’s Oasis, Quantum, Freedom, and Voyager class ships offer endless options for teens: rock walls, mini golf, ping pong, sports courts, splash areas, great pools, and dedicated teen clubs with video games and hangout spaces. Their entertainment lineup—Aqua shows, ice skating spectaculars, comedy shows—also offer teens even more independence while keeping them safely within the ship’s boundaries.
A Close Second Place: Disney Cruise Line
A Strong Option for Independent Teens
While Disney Cruise Line is known for the best cruise line with young kids, they’re also excellent for teens and tweens. Their Wish class ships feature EDGE and VIBE, exclusive teen only clubs that give older kids a space away from parents. Add in water coasters like the AquaMouse and AquaDuck, sports courts, immersive details, movie theaters, and Broadway level shows, there is plenty to do while sailing. Cruising with Mickey Mouse is another great option for for teens, especially for those who love theater, music, art, and storytelling.
Choosing the Right Cabin for Teens
Cabin selection matters more than most families realize. Interior cabins can work with the right setup—ask your room steward to leave bunk beds or pulldowns open to create extra space. If budget is a large concern, the interior rooms allow for the adventure to still happen. We do recommend an entertaining ship, however, for those who choose interior rooms.
Oceanview cabins often have Murphy beds or foldouts that help maximize room layout. It is nice to be able to see the ocean and feel like their is extra space with the presence of sunlight.
Balcony cabins are also great with more cabin space but can be tricky with teens. Particularly if you have taller teens or siblings of different genders, since many only offer a pullout couch that converts into two side-by-side twins, that may not be the most conducive sleeping arrangement. If that’s not ideal, consider cabins that sleep five, which often include bunk style beds, or book two separate cabins for more space and comfort for everyone. We will always recommend two connecting cabins for space and so everyone can stretch out and enjoy their experience.
If you need a single cabin, Disney cruise line is well known for their stateroom options because they have the ability to sleep a family of five easily. Everyone has their own are to sleep. They also have two bathrooms so that getting ready with multiple people is a little easier.
Now with Royal Caribbean’s king beds, they can actually be separated into two twins, which may be helpful for larger teens wanting their own space.

Extra Items to Bring for Sailing Smoothly with Teens
Over the years, we’ve learned a few essentials that make cruising with teens easier and more enjoyable:
Walkie-talkies: The apps don’t always connect properly, and teens don’t always check
their messages. Not everyone has a cell phone. We find that Walkie-talkies give everyone a simpler way to stay in touch and provide peace of mind that communication won’t be missed.
Lanyards: Perfect for keeping track of individual SeaPass cards.
Snacks: Teens are always hungry, especially during port days. Bringing snacks off the ship saves time and money before you get back on board for ice cream and pizza.
Handheld gaming devices: Great for downtime before dinner or decompressing after
busy days, especially if in a smaller cabin.
Space saving cabin items: Multiplug chargers, magnetic hooks, and organizers help keep the room functional without clutter. Try to assign everyone their own space to keep things organized.
Why Cruising Works So Well for Families with Teens
Cruising is one of the most convenient, budget friendly ways to travel with teens. It gives them independence, gives parents a sense of reassurance, and gives everyone a chance to
relax however they want—especially mom, who doesn’t have to cook a single meal. Everything is pre-planned, so once you’re onboard, your biggest decision is what to eat for dinner.
With school, sports, and activities becoming more expensive every year, cruising remains an affordable way to make lasting memories during the short window of opportunity teens are still at home. These trips matter. They’re the ones your kids will remember most. Choosing the right cruise line and ship ensures those memories are amazing.
