Universal Epic Universe Grand Opening: My First Look at Universal Orlando’s Newest Theme Park

On May 21, 2025, I had the absolute privilege of attending the grand opening of Universal Orlando’s newest theme park, Epic Universe, and let me tell you… It was EPIC in every sense of the word. The trip was quick but packed with unforgettable moments, jaw-dropping details, and experiences that left me buzzing long after I returned home.

First Stop: Terra Luna & Stella Nova

I arrived the evening before the event and checked into Terra Luna, one of Universal’s two newest hotels. The lobby immediately struck me with its open, airy feel, and the quick-service dining area offered plenty of space for families. The pool was a standout, it was large, inviting, and had a zero-entry access and tons of loungers.

The next day, I walked over to explore Stella Nova, Terra Luna’s sister resort that is right next door. While the rooms share the same layout, Stella Nova’s lobby felt more intimate and cozy. Its biggest perk? It’s also within walking distance of Epic Universe, but even closer than Terra Luna. I would say this makes it the most convenient choice for guests planning to spend their days in the new park.

Both hotels were fantastic, but if I had to choose, Terra Luna would still be my choice.

For guests wanting an elevated hotel with access directly into EPIC, I would recommend HELIOS at the location and deluxe feel of the resort can't be beat.

The Premier Event Begins

By late afternoon, I made my way to Will Call, picked up my event badge, and joined the crowd waiting outside the gates. When the gates opened around 5pm, we were greeted with a red-carpet photo op in front of the brand-new EPIC sign, which was an unforgettable way to kick off the night.

Even the entry gates were stunning, decorated with symbols representing each portal inside the park (and even a few blank spaces hinting at future expansions). The moment I stepped inside, I knew this was going to my favorite Universal park.

Celestial Park: Stardust Racers

My first stop was Stardust Racers, the fastest coaster in the park. The queue splits into two sides, green and yellow, and each represents a different track that races the other. I chose yellow, and WOW… it was intense. Fast, smooth, and thrilling. The ride attendants claimed yellow was the faster side, but honestly, both tracks looked equally wild. Definitely not for the faint of heart!

Isle of Berk:

Next, I headed into my first portal: the Isle of Berk. Walking under the archway felt like stepping straight into the How to Train Your Dragon universe. Dragons perched on rooftops, sheep tucked into corners sleeping with baby dragons, and there were details everywhere you looked.

This land is packed with experiences for all ages:

• Viking Training Camp

• Fyre Drill water ride

• Dragon Racer’s Rally

• Hiccup’s Wing Glider

And yes...I met Toothless. I did not have time for the shows or food, but I heard the Untrainable Dragon is one you don’t want to miss.

Super Nintendo World:

Crossing Celestial Park, I made my way up the escalator into Super Nintendo World, and the moment I walked through Princess Peach’s Castle, I felt like I had stepped into the video game I grew up playing.

Everything moved, from coins spinning, piranha plants snapping, power-up blocks flashing. It was sensory overload in the best way.

I rode Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, and the queue alone felt like a tour through Bowser’s Castle. The attraction is incredibly detailed, though it may be challenging for some guests with disabilities.

Then I made my way to Donkey Kong: Mine-Cart Madness, one of the most impressive coasters I’ve ever ridden. At one point, it genuinely feels like the cart jumps the track. I even got to wave hello to Donkey Kong himself.

Before leaving, I stopped by Toadstool Café and met Toad, he was as adorable as ever.

Ministry of Magic:

Walking through the tunnel into the Ministry of Magic, I felt transported to 1920s Paris. The land was beautifully designed, capturing both the charm and the darker undertones of the era. A day in an age I always wish I could live through, and I finally got that chance here.

A massive table of delicious, themed treats greeted us:

• Butterbeer crêpes

• Niffler-shaped bread

• Charcuterie spreads

I met up with our A Mouse and a Beach Travel owners, Dave and Mary, and together we entered the Ministry through the Floo Network on the attraction, Harry Potter and the Battle of the Ministry. Unfortunately, it was experiencing delays, so we continued on to the next universe.

Dark Universe:

By the time we reached Dark Universe, the sun had set, making the experience even more immersive. The tunnel glowed ominously, and stepping inside felt like entering a classic Universal monster film.

We met Igor, explored Dr. Frankenstein’s castle, and rode Monsters Unchained, which brought all the iconic creatures to life in spectacular fashion.

I then decided to ride Curse of the Werewolf, a backwards-launch coaster that twists and turns like you’re actually fleeing a werewolf. Experiencing this land at night made it even more unforgettable with an eerie feel.

The Grand Finale: Drone & Light Show

On the back side of the Helios Grand Resort, which is inside the park, we gathered in front of the fountain for the exclusive drone and light show created just for premier guests. This was one of the most impressive nighttime spectaculars I’ve ever seen.

Afterward, we squeezed in one last attraction: the Constellation Carousel. This isn’t your typical carousel. The creatures glide gracefully across a moving floor, making you feel like you’re floating through the stars. Magical doesn’t even begin to describe it.

A Night to Remember

By midnight, we headed back to our hotels, glowing from the experience. Between the food, drinks, entertainment, celebrity sightings (hello Frankie Grande and JoJo Siwa!), and the chance to explore Epic Universe before the public, this event was truly once-in-a-lifetime.

Epic Universe is a masterpiece, and I cannot wait for my clients to experience it for themselves. I loved it so much that I have scheduled a trip with my entire family later this year. Get ready for a blog covering how that experience goes with two teenage boys!
