Some days, your greatest dreams come true. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit one of my favorite fictional places: the Isle of Berk. This new area at the brand new Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, Florida, is one of four new portals that guests can enter. Isle of Berk puts you right into the heart of the How To Train Your Dragon franchise.

Imagine walking through the portal entrance, under the iconic movie tagline “We, my friends, have dragons!” and stepping right into the Viking village. As you enter, a stone carved with the familiar opening lines of the movies greets you as the movie score swells in the background. You look up, and before you is the harbor, complete with Norse-style totems of a Viking and dragon looming right up out of the water.
As you stare around in wonder, joyful screams cut through your amazement as a roller coaster zips by with guests pretending to fly on the back of a dragon riding Hiccup’s Wing Gliders. This family style coaster, with a 40” height requirement, takes you on a trip around the portal with glimpses of Hiccup, Toothless and even a few surprise dragons along the way. For me, nothing beats the feeling of soaring over hills with the theme song playing all around - I might have even shed a few tears of joy that my fellow advisors captured on video!

Making your way into the village, you’ll find a fantastic spot for younger guests to burn off a little extra Viking energy in the Viking Training Camp - a multi story climbing and interactive space complete with dragons and ships to explore! Of course, for bigger Vikings, taking to the skies is the dream and that dream can be fulfilled by flying high on Dragon Racer’s Rally! This high flying ride lets riders glide through the air and even attempt to barrel roll their dragon with a gorgeous view of the Isle of Berk below.

If you visit on a hot day, be sure to visit Fyre Drill, a family friendly Viking boat battle ride. You’ll glide through the water, aiming for dragon “fire” targets, all while trying to soak the other Vikings on other boats. It’s a great way to cool off during a hot Florida summer!

All the fun and excitement is sure to work up a Viking sized appetite and Isle of Berk does not disappoint! Find hearty meals, including my favorite - Swedish meatballs with lingonberry jam, at the impressive Mead Hall - a Viking gathering place built right into the side of a mountain. With its vaulted ceilings and gorgeous tapestries depicting all your favorite Vikings and their dragons, this is the perfect place to relax and refuel.
Vikings will also love grabbing the new fan favorite Macaroni and Cheese Cones for a super fun and delicious option that’s great while relaxing or on the go! Our crew opted to try the PB and J - Pork, Bacon and Jam, a delicious combo of mac & cheese with bbq pulled pork and peanut bacon jam served in a crunchy cone and it was fantastic!
Just when I thought I couldn’t love the Isle of Berk more, it was time to see The Untrainable Dragon. A live show featuring some of your favorite characters, including Hiccup, Astrid, Gobbler and Toothless! With drummers providing the soundtrack right on stage, fast paced action and a story that will bring tears to your eyes, it’s a can’t miss addition to any trip!
