Let's SHORTEN Those Magical Ride Queues!
Contributed By
It seems the term “Lightning Lane” has become quite the buzz word for Disney goers, and with the launch of the Lightning Lane Premier Pass (along with the continued evolution of FastPasses to Genie+ to Lightning Lane Multi Pass...), we can understand why someone may think they need a degree in Disney Lingo to understand how to best navigate these systems. Luckily, our A Mouse and a Beach Team can help break down what each of these mean, and the best strategies to use them. Another excellent reason to utilize our complimentary planning services!
In short, the Lightning Lane is the line you use to skip the standby lines for rides and attractions. You can think of it as an express pass to the front of the line. There are three different lightning lanes available for purchase: Lightning Lane Single Pass, Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and Lightning Lane Premier Pass.
Let's break these down a bit further:
Lightning Lane Single Pass:
For the higher demand rides in each park, Lightning Lane Single Pass is available (formerly called Individual Lightning Lane) to purchase ahead of time or day of if there is still availability.
For Lightning Lane Single Pass, you can simply purchase to ride a single attraction, which is typically one of the most popular rides in the park. You can purchase up to two Lightning Lane Single Passes per day. You don't have to purchase anything else to purchase these individually. We recommend securing these as soon as you know what you want because there is a limited quantity per day.
The LL Single Pass experiences include:
Tron Lightcycle/Run (Magic Kingdom)
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Magic Kingdom)
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (EPCOT)
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (Hollywood Studios)
Avatar Flight of Passage (Animal Kingdom)
When purchasing a Lightning Lane Single Pass, you will be given a return window to use your Lightning Lane. Pricing varies per ride and depends on the day and season.
Lightning Lane Multi Pass:
With Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you can pre plan your visit and select up to three multi pass attractions, experiences, or shows ahead of time.
Once you are in the park and check into your first experience, you can choose another multi pass experience, keeping three booked at all times. For guests with Park Hopper passes - pre-selections can only be made for one park. However, once you use the first of your pre-selections, you’ll be able to choose a different park for your next selection towards the end of the day.
If you are feeling some FastPass nostalgia, it’s because this system is very similar. You can plan ahead of time! The recent Genie+ system was less flexible with pre-planning, so this was a welcomed change and no longer requires guests to get up super early during their vacation. One of our AMAAB advisors can help with the best strategy for your family in order to get the most out of using Lightning Lane Multi Pass.
Once you have your pre-selections booked, you can modify your times during your park day, but they are subject to availability. There are a limited number of Lightning Lanes available for each experience. Some experiences will fill up quicker than others, so make sure you prioritize your family's high demand experiences. If the app does not give you an available time window, then that experience has filled up for the day.
Multi Pass experiences at Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT are divided into two tiers. Guests can select one ride from tier one and two from tier two, or make all selections from tier two. A breakdown of the tiers in each park can be found on the Walt Disney World website located here.

NEW! Lightning Lane Premier Pass
On October 30, 2024, Disney began piloting the Lightning Lane Premier Pass, and in November it became available for purchase to all guests staying at any resort on Disney property. The Premier Pass allows one-time entry to each Lightning Lane experience in a park, without having to schedule ahead of time. You can simply show up to a ride at your leisure, and enter through the Lightning Lane entrance.
Currently, the Lightning Lane Premier Pass is only available for purchase in limited quantities. Eligible guests can purchase Lightning Lane Premier Passes up to 7 days before the first day of their resort stay.
Lightning Lane Premier Passes can be purchased through the My Disney Experience app. Prices will be reflected in the app, and start at $129 per person per day. It is important to note that the pricing will vary per theme park and date.
Ultimately, if you value your time spent while on vacation and you prefer getting the most rides in while visiting, we recommend budgeting ahead of time for these passes. They are excellent additions to help create more of a stress-free experience while visiting this magical destination.
